YOP Update – 7/18-7/24

SOCK UPDATE

Well, despite my saying I wouldn’t knit anymore socks on 9″, I did transfer my son-in-law’s Christmas socks to 9″ so that I could have a tiny project to take with me to the grocery store and then to the soccer game. I got to the game about an hour early so got in a few rounds. Then I sat in the parking garage for 20+ minutes waiting for traffic to clear out and got in some more rounds. It’s so nice to be retired and not have to get to work the next morning. Knitting makes waiting fun instead of frustrating. Maybe if I had knit while still working, I’d have gotten to meetings on time. Would have made those god-awful safety and department meetings much more bearable.

TANK TOP UPDATE

Ugh. Ripped out my son’s GF’s tank last night. It was way too big despite knitting the size S and she is at least a M. I don’t really mind since it’s bottom up so I had only knit the front and back hems and then about 15 rows of body. I hated the hem because the stitches were too large. I dropped the hem needle size by 2 and the body by 1. I’m now knitting the body with same size needle as I did my daughter’s top last summer so I know I like the gauge/fabric. I will again have her try on the hem/body to make sure it’s not still too large or now too small. I’d like to get it done by mid August which is only 3 weeks away!! I think it’s a pretty easy pattern and the stitches decrease as you get the yoke/neck. Still that means focusing on my knitting instead of spending too much time on the internet.

Restart – Back on Hems

That’s it. Two WIPs. I really don’t like to have a lot of WIPs. I prefer to be a more monogamous knitter. I want to get the tank done so that I can cast-on my Advent 2019 colorwork socks. Once I get a few stripes finished I’ll cast on my daughter’s Sailormoon as I want to get that done by Thanksgiving. So focus is the key!!

This is a year of projects (YOP) update. YOP is a Ravelry Group – make a plan for the year ahead for all your fiber activities, then update your blog each week. Plans can be calendar year (like mine) or mid-year start (like many). Following the plan is optional and creates some of the fun of posts. YOP is in it’s 11th year. It’s my second in the group.

  1. I have become a big fan of Zoom/Teams online meetings at work thanks to COVID, since I can knit easy things (like socks) and feel like I’m being productive even if the meeting isn’t! Looks like a fun time out at the ballpark!

    1. I find gauge is more for being in the ballpark. For sweaters, I end up remeasuring the gauge after I get a big enough section done and compare it to the dry gauge of my swatch. Since I don’t make “fitted” garments, as long as it’s not going to be too tight, I just keep going. I do adjust based on row gauge focusing on inches instead of rows. Maybe that’s why I like socks with a short partern repeat.. It’s always about the measured length, not the number of rows.

  2. Yay – nice to meet another monogamous knitter. I always feel so out of the group with most of my knitter friends and all their wips. Hope the sweater is the right size now – I am glad it wasn’t too much that you had to frog. I love the colour of the restart! I too am glad to be retired – and I did use to bring knitting to meetings when I was working – it didn’t help me get there early, but it did help me feel like the repetitive boring discussions weren’t a total waste of my time if it meant a few more rows done on a pair of socks or a shawl.

  3. I like having a little portable project, and socks are just that! A huge unwieldy blanket is NOT good outdoor/car knitting.

How frustrating, not getting the size to work out on the tank top! Fingers crossed that it’s right this time!!

  4. Great timing. I just had Caitlyn try on the top to confirm fit and then I saw your note. All good to keep knitting it. I am going to do a little waist decreasing before starting some bust increases. She is pretty busty so I’m a little worried.

  5. Those Christmas socks look great! The 9 inch needles are great for take along projects. I only discovered the 9 in circulars recently and they have become my favorites!

    1. Thanks. I really prefer knitting 2 at a time. Even these socks are an example. I decided to reduce the number of stitches. Now I have to try to remember when I made the reduction of stitches when I make the 2nd sock. But 9″ are great when I need to sit in a tight space like an airplane seat of my soccer seat.

  6. I don’t think we’ll ever find a cure for those awful meetings so I’m glad we have a craft that can help us make it through them.

I’m sure undoing what you did on the top was not what you wanted to do but it’s nice that you’ve found a gauge and fabric you like.

Your socks look lovely and I can’t wait to see them done!
